Tigers are endangered animals. Each subspecies of panthera tigris requires considerable conservation efforts. Tigers need a particular type of habitat, which is a problem now, since much of their natural habitat has been destroyed for agricultural purposes.
There are five remaining subspecies of panthera tigris left in the wild. They are the Siberian, Sumatran, Bengal, South China and Indochinese. Tigers suffer extreme population decline not only due to loss of habitat, but also due to the reduction in numbers of its prey, deliberate poisoning by farmers, poaching and hunting. Also, the body parts of tigers are considered to have medicinal value.
Tigers - Photos - Subspecies
Of the eight subspecies of tigers, each possesses its unique physical characteristics, range and history. The Bengal tiger is distributed throughout the humid forests of China, India and Nepal. The black stripes on an orange background color are widely spaced in this subspecies.
The Sumatran tiger is found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. This tiger's color is darker than that of the mainland tigers. The stripes are numerous and closely spaced.
South China tigers are the most rare of the world's remaining tiger subspecies. This nearly extinct subspecies lives within China's borders.
The Siberian tiger is the least striped of all the subspecies. It is the largest of the big cats, weighing up to 675 pounds and measuring 10 feet 10 inches long.
The Indochinese tiger is found in Indochina. Their body color is slightly lighter than that of the Sumatran tiger. The Bali tiger, the Java and Caspian tigers are now extinct.
