Tigers - Photos - Diet

Tigers mainly hunt hoofed mammals. However, these cats are likely to eat anything they can catch. They stalk and ambush predators using the dense covering to conceal themselves and then sneak up on their prey. Only one in ten attacks is successful for tiger hunters.

Having killed its victim, the tiger drags the carcass into a dense covering and begins eating. A tiger is capable of consuming 20-35 kg of meat per meal. Female tigers are known to kill more often in order to feed their young as well as themselves.

Tigers eat wild deer, cattle and pigs. They may attack bears, wolves, elephants and rhinos. They also have been reported to occasionally kill domestic livestock.

There are some stories about tigers having become man-eaters. Basically, tigers avoid humans, as they are not a valuable prey for them. Only old tigers and those that are injured and cannot bring down a strong hoofed animal any more, can happen to be deliberately hunting on a human. Whatever the reason, once a tiger becomes a man-eater, it is most likely to strike again. Such tigers have to be destroyed to protect people from attacks. Tigers are reported to have killed more people than any other species of big cats.
